Captain Simon Baer is a seasoned maritime professional and competitive yachtsman, bringing deep expertise and commitment to Octopus SPC. Educated in Maritime Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Simon spent 17 years at sea working for several leading shipping companies, including Safmarine and Smit Amandla, which ultimately lead to Simon obtaining his Master Unlimited Certificate of Competency. At Smit Amandla, he specialized in support, supply, and anchor handling, rare skills that highlight his leadership in the field. Promoted to captain in his late twenties, Simon’s career showcases his dedication and skill.
 
In 2020, Simon founded Baer Marine (Pty) Ltd, earning a stellar reputation for meticulous vessel inspections. At Octopus SPC, he oversees front office operations, advising clients on vessel requirements and offering innovative alternatives. His extensive industry knowledge and network enable seamless connections and effective solutions for clients.
 
Simon’s competitive yachting career, representing South Africa in numerous World and European Championships, reflects his relentless drive and passion for maritime pursuits. His extensive experience and dedication make him a vital asset to Octopus SPC, ensuring clients receive top-tier service and expert advice.

Matthew M’Crystal is a seasoned attorney with a deep interest and growing expertise in maritime law, bringing a wealth of experience and a passion for the sea to Octopus SPC. With a strong foundation in commercial negotiation and drafting, Matthew’s legal skills are unparalleled.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce with Honours in Business Finance, followed by a Law degree from the University of Witwatersrand. He also completed a Master’s in Banking Law with a focus on international banking, achieving a top-of-the-class award.

Matthew began his professional journey in 2016, starting his own legal practice and gaining invaluable experience over a decade. His critical thinking and solution-oriented approach have been crucial in navigating complex legal landscapes. His lifelong passion for sailing, sparked at age 10, fueled his transition to maritime law. Representing South Africa as a junior sailor, Matthew’s love for the sea has always been intertwined with his professional pursuits.

To further his maritime credentials, Matthew undertook the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers’ professional qualification and completed a foundation diploma in the legal principles of shipping business. These qualifications enable him to think outside the box for bespoke solutions while appreciating the value of established charter parties.
